JOSEPH HOKAI TANG
Joseph Tang is a notorious con artist and convicted felon who trafficked globally in stolen items via personal contact, as well as internet sites such as Craig’s List, Tarisio and eBay. He often used third parties to fund his financial transactions in an effort to cloak his identity or involvement. He falsely claimed non-receipt of items, bait and switched items, used stolen IDs and insisted on non-refundable wire service payments. That and bounced checks were favorite tactics of Mr. Tang. He often purchased expensive wines or Asian antiques. In October 2008, he was convicted of 10 counts of fraud, sentenced to 37 months in prison, 3 years of parole and ordered to repay $436,800 to his victims. He was released from prison in July 2011, deported from California back to Canada and permanently banned from re-entering the US. He is in violation of his court ordered restitution payments. He remains a person of interest wanted for questioning about missing items in numerous European and Asian countries.
About twenty years ago at an informal showing at the local university music program, someone was passing around a "Nicolo Gagliano" with a label from the 1800's...except that he died in 1780. When I brought up the inconsistency, I was asked to leave as I didn't "appreciate the work done by the collector to make fine instruments accessible for students."
And that's just the small stuff...look at the big scams perpetrated by Dietmar Machold as well as Joseph Hokai Tang/Hao Ji/Joey Dang. Liars and scammers, all of them.
